OFICINA REGIONAL DE UNFPA PARA AMÉRICA LATINA Y EL CARIBE - El Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas, UNFPA, se encuentra en alerta y forma parte de la respuesta humanitaria requerida, producto del paso del huracán Irma por el Caribe.

El objetivo principal de UNFPA en los países afectados es realizar intervenciones en materia de salud sexual y reproductiva, que salvaguarden la vida de las personas, incluyendo cuidados obstétricos de emergencia, así como la distribución de kits de salud sexual y reproductiva e insumos dirigidos a los centros que prestan servicios de salud.

UNFPA también ha concentrado sus esfuerzos en la prevención de la violencia basada en género, asegurando que los sobrevivientes de VBG tengan acceso a servicios de salud, apoyo sicosocial y a redes de apoyo comunitario.

Se estima que 90 mil mujeres en edad fértil hayan sido directamente afectadas por la crisis en el Caribe Oriental, incluyendo 18 mil mujeres embarazadas.

UNFPA enviará un equipo de apoyo, responsable de determinar las necesidades más urgentes, recolectar datos y dar inicio a la respuesta inicial al Caribe Oriental. El 17 de septiembre, UNFPA enviará un especialista en violencia basada en género a Antigua y de ahí se movilizará a las islas afectadas.

En Haití, UNFPA ha enviado un equipo capacitado para trabajar en el norte y noreste de la isla, conjuntamente con el Ministerio de Salud y el Centro de Salud y Desarrollo, a fin de determinar las necesidades de las mujeres y adolescentes más vulnerables en las áreas afectadas y garantizar la entrega de los kits de higiene. En el área de Ouanminthe, UNFPA está apoyando la instalación de clínicas móviles, priorizando las necesidades de las mujeres embarazadas que han sido desplazadas.

En Cuba, UNFPA está finalizando su plan de respuesta humanitaria y espera contribuir a la rehabilitación de los centros que prestan servicios de salud, por medio de la entrega de kits de salud sexual y reproductiva. También se están entregando aproximadamente 2 mil kits de dignidad, destinados a mujeres embarazadas, así como mujeres y adolescentes que se encuentran en albergues.

Desde su oficina regional en América Latina y el Caribe, UNFPA está trabajando conjuntamente con la oficina subregional en el Caribe y sus oficinas de país en Cuba, Haití y República Dominicana, así como con todas las agencias del Sistema de Naciones Unidas, a fin de coordinar de manera integral la respuesta a la emergencia

UNFPA: On Alert and at the Service of Women and Adolescent Girls who Could be Affected by Hurricane Irma

UNFPA'S REGIONAL OFFICE FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN - The United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, is on alert and is part of the humanitarian response that is required in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean.

UNFPA’s focus in affected countries is to provide life-saving Sexual and Reproductive Health interventions, including emergency obstetric care and distribution of emergency reproductive health kits and supplies to targeted health facilities. UNFPA also focuses on prevention of GBV and ensuring survivors of GBV have safe access to health care, basic psychosocial support services, and community-based support networks.

An estimated 90 thousand women and girls of reproductive age directly affected by the crisis in the Eastern Caribbean, including approximately 18 thousand pregnant women. These women now face challenges in accessing reproductive health services.

UNFPA will deploy a surge team for the Eastern Caribbean to support rapid needs assessment, data collection and initial response in the affected countries. UNFPA surge gender-based violence specialist will be deployed on 17 September to Antigua, where she will be available to mobilize to affected islands.

In Haiti, UNFPA deployed a team to the North and North East of the island to work with the local Ministry of Health and the Development and Health Center (CDS) to coordinate on assessing the needs of vulnerable women and young girls in the affected areas and to observe the distribution of hygiene kits. UNFPA is also supporting mobile medical clinics in Ouanminthe, prioritizing displaced pregnant women.

In Cuba, UNFPA is finalizing its response plan and expects to support the rehabilitation of damaged health facilities through the delivery of reproductive health kits and provide approximately 2,000 Dignity Kits targeting pregnant women and women and girls in shelters.

Through its Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, UNFPA is working together with the Caribbean sub regional office and its country offices in Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, as well as with all the different UN agencies, to coordinate the response to the emergency.
